Ocean Power

Wind is not the only technology involving the capture of a fluid’s power. Wave power and tidal power are both just over the horizon.Wave power is a perfect complement to wind. Since water is a thousand times more dense than air, its movement packs a much greater wallop and allows us to create vast amounts of energy with a smaller “footprint,” or in this case “web footprint.” Unlike wind, the waves are relatively constant, and equipment already in the water is generating electricity. The Finavera Company has become the first to obtain permits for the installation of electricity-generating buoys off the Oregon coast. The real challenge for wave power is to build equipment that can survive the awesome force of a swell that seems to have been designed to destroy anything made by man. Another wave power company, Ocean Power Technologies, is built on software that can tamp down the movements of the buoys that would otherwise destroy them in heavy seas.
